There are several themes in this blog post by artist Austin Kleon. But the theme I want to point out is the theme of having another person in the room with you. Americans have this myth of the individual. We have these characters everyone knows: the lone genius, the self-sufficient man, the self-made man, you know the types I mean. A successful politician has to look like he doesn’t actually have a whole team doing his work for him. We think we have a President and his staff is invisible. Then we whine about how the majority of us (who are all support staff) are treated like we’re invisible and not even paid a living wage. We are invisible. We even base our decisions about everything from how we treat waitresses in restaurants to who we vote for in an election on agreeing that we should be invisible.
What baloney. The human being is a social animal.
It’s amazing what you can accomplish when you don’t care who gets the credit. (interesting commentary found when looking for who said it first)
That’s how a social animal works. Give-and-take.
Add to it the general discussion of how awful it is to be exploited and nobody gets anything done.
